Unhappy Ram Problem

When I originally assembled system (abit KG7 RAID W/AMD XP 1600+)with one 256mb stick of micron pc2100 ram everything went fine, added soundcard and modem, still fine, added second ram module, and started having problems, norton diagnostics consistently shows ram error at address 274...... I assumed second ram module was bad, system works fine with just one. I decided to go with Crucial registered ECC RAM, I recieved my new RAM today and am now having the same problem, I bought 2 new 256mb sticks, system runs fine with one stick, add the second and get ram errors, Blue screen low memory, norton diagnostics same results, I am thinking this must be a problem with the second ram slot which on this motherboard is DIMM 3, I have made sure the ram is seated properly, any other suggestions? or do I need a new motherboard?

What OS are you using? Some of them flake out with 512 megs or more in them.

Not that it really helps, but I have always had problems with the KG7 and KT7 boards running 512MB ram. Some just dont like that amount.

The Norton System Works Memory test will always show a memory error when more than one stick of ram is installed. DO NOT PAY ANY ATTENTION TO THESE RESULTS!
This has been a known problem with this program and they have done nothing to correct it.
Now that that is said,
1. Try the system with just one stick installed at a time to determine if one of the sticks is truely bad.

If you are getting into Windows, then the problem is with Windows.

2. Go> Start> Programs> Accessories>System Tools and see if it indicates the correct amount of memory in the information window that will open.

3. Reset you VCache Settings with the link below

or if you are not sure what to do with the above, download the Cacheman program from the link below and use the presets menu (it's free)

You might want to check this out:

http://support.microsoft.com/support.../Q253/9/12.ASP

It says "more than 512 megs", but it might apply to your system too, especially if you are using a non-standard AGP aperature size, such as one more than 128 megs.
