bios parity check

I'm trying to sort out a friend's machine.

As he had only 32Mb RAM I've put in a new 128Mb. The machine seems to run fine but if I enable BIOS parity check, it says there's a system error and hangs.

I'm just running CheckIt Memory test which reported errors too numerous to mention with the old memory installed (it gave up about half way through the memory check, so I'll see what results come up with the new.

The main memory has passed but CheckIt says the video memory has failed, so that is an improvement (its an old Trio 3D card).

So back to my original question - should I be concerned about the parity check?

Considering you most likely do not have parity type memory, nope. Can you give us more system details?

Its a Gigabyte GA-5AA motherboard running Windows 98SE with an S3 Trio3D AGp card for which I have found the right driver and a Release Sound FX soundcard for which I haven't.
The RAM from crucial is 128MB 168-pin DIMM 16M*64 SDRAM PC100
Cheers

Yep - thats not parity enabled memory. I would seriously consider pulling the 32mb stick out and running just the 128.

Release Sound FX? I can't find such an animal - check the main chip on the board and post what it says on it.....

AD1816? ESS something - like 1868? Opti something - like 924?

Reveal is long out of business and Opti stopped providing driver support. You can *try* these drivers - no guarantee......

ftp://ftp.diamondmm.com/pub/multimed...9/mm929w95.exe

If the machine runs fine, I wouldnt worry about diags.

Cheers I'll try the sound link.

One further question.

I fdisked, etc: installed windows98SE, Ofiice 97: it works. This was with the faulty memory chip in place.

Now I've put the new memory in and installed Money 2000, which my friend wants to use. It failed to work before on his machine, but it still fails to work. It installs but then comes up with a series of problems when I try to run it.

Should I start all over again? The error messages point to problems with dll files. The first was MPIUE, so I copied that from my machine to the MONEY\SYSTEM folder; then it threw up MSOFD & OFDUTIL.

It seems very strange that a pretty clean install of Win98 can't handle Money.

Could the problem stem back to a faulty memory chip during the install?

The sound driver was not accepted by Win98.

Do you think I should redo the whole thing - ie install Windows again?
