It could be a power supply problem. You didn't really give
enough info to diagnose online though. List your entire boot
process in as much detail as you can.

Check all fans for proper operation, check for overheating cpu, reseat or replace ram, get rid of the Ontrack suite, use msconfig to shut off unnecessary background programs running at startup, scan for viruses and trojans.

Quick Fix Try

You can always try restoring your Registry from a few
days or weeks ago (if you have such a copy), for a quick
fix try.

If your machine starts Win98 long enough to type a command
in, then: from the Start menu, choose "RUN". In the dialog
box that opens, type:
scanreg/restore
This should bring up a list of dates for copies of your Registry.
If you haven't installed anything lately, choose one from a date
before you started having your latest trouble.

If your machine isn't booting far enough to type that command,
try booting either from a startup floppy or your Win98SE CD.
Scanreg/restore will work from the Cd-rom drive. Some folks
find it easiest to do it this way:
1) Put your startup floppy in its drive & boot.
2) From the boot menu, choose "Start computer with Cd-rom support"
3) After the computer has booted to the A: prompt, put your
Win98SE CD in your Cd-rom drive, while holding down the SHIFT
key (so that it doesn't start Setup...and if Setup does start,
just select CANCEL).
4) Switch to your Cd-rom drive by typing D: (or whatever letter
your Cd-rom drive happens to be - E, F, G ...)
5) From the command prompt for your Cd-rom drive (probably D
type: cd\Win98
6) From the D:\Win98 prompt, type: scanreg/restore
7) Select a date from the list that's earlier than the start
of your latest trouble.
8) If you don't have any such dates (or none at all), don't
panic, some system utilities use the old backup copies to
do even more complete restoring of system settings along
with other files (WildFire's "Go Back" utility, on many
Gateway systems, seems to do this) In such cases, search
through the manuals that came with the utility.

There are a great many other things to try. But this is one of
the simplest. The ideas about checking your power supply and
memory are good ones. If you have any documentation on the BIOS
settings of your motherboard, you can also try entering BIOS SETUP
(usually available by pressing either the DEL key or the F1 key
during the Power-On-Self-Test [POST] - which happens each time you
start your PC). If a power surge has affected your BIOS settings,
especially the CPU speed setting, that could cause a constant restart
such as you're experiencing.

If you need more ideas, let me know.

The proper way to run scanreg/restore is from a boot to a command prompt only or a restart in DOS mode, you run it from a C prompt. No need to use a floppy or a CD.

We don't have enough info yet to properly recommend a registry restore.

sure sounds like something is loose, cutting power to the system or part of it.

You should have taken one step at a time. You were correct in noting that problems began with McAfee. At that point, uninstalling, or disabling and running the pc for awhile should verify stability. Installing a firewall and Norton at same time could present some screwy problems. I'd install one and run for awhile, then the other.

If you connect to ISP but can't go anywhere, hopefully a few changes in ISP properties will fix.

Yes or removing all unneedet TCP/IP Protocols from the Network Applet in control panel - leaving only one TCP/IP in there - this is a major issue to not beeing able to browse ...getting connected but then just staying there and no where to go to..

As for Mcafee and Norton - use one of them which ever you like but not both at the same time as Norton doesn't like to see Mcafee on the hard drive as well as Mcafee doesn't like to see Norton..

Sometimes back with Norton utilities - it wouldn't install if Mcafee was running - hehe
