Windows startup problem

When i boot up, my computer stops and asks:

Would you like to Run:
Windows XP Home Edition
Windows

The highlighted selection will be run in XX seconds (counts down)

This isnt really that big of a deal but its annoying and slows down my startup process. Any ideas?

If it's doing that, you have a dual boot setup with Windows 98. Hit the enter key to choose XP, arrow key down to "Windows" then enter key to run Win98.

If you don't have a dual boot setup, then I believe your master boot record needs to be repaired.

If you are using the Home Edition of XP, did you update it from Win98? If so, the MBR might not have been completey wiped of Win98. If you've never had Win98 on there, then uhh... let mc handle it.

Well...I haven't even played a game of solitaire on windows XP yet. In Windows 2000, you'd boot to the Repair Console, and use the "fixmbr" command. Wait awhile, see if reboot, glc, or HPro sees this and tells me if I'm right or not.

Check your system for a file called "boot.ini". You might have to change the view settings under Tools (in Windows Explorer) to find it. Open that file and take a look (Be careful messing around in that file!!!!!!!) You should see 2 entries in their matching your boot record description.

Usually you can remove the entry that is out of date (should be the Windows One if I understand you properly). If you are unsure - please post the content of that file here!

Christoph

PS: This file is important - make a backup - be sure that you remove only the entry that does not belong there! You're the man in charge!

Hey thanks, now we're getting somewhere! heres the contents of boot.ini:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
C:\ = "Microsoft Windows"

I assume im going to be changing that, so what should i do exactly?
