ups back up recommendations
Hey,
I currently have an older APC ups back up on my desktop pc. It doesn't have the software that allows me to control the alarms. Too old of a model, there isn't a data port. For some reason the alarm that goes off when there is a power outage really disturbs my dog. I would like to replace it with a ups that either doesn't have alarms (unlikely) or one that I can override or mute the alarms. Anyone have a model or know of a model that does what I want?? Thanks |

APC makes units that can have the alarm disabled. When the alarm goes off, you hit the ON button once and the alarm will go off. Alternatively, you can actually physically remove the buzzer from the unit, and it will stop buzzing. We had to do that surgery on a Smart-UPS 1000VA, it was driving my boss nuts every time it would test itself or go on batteries. We opened it up and removed the buzzer. No harm done. We know when the power is out and don't need a secondary buzzer driving us nuts. If your unit works well now, maybe that's the first thing you should try. Could save yourself a few dollars. |

That is an interesting idea. I might have to try that. I'm not always home to shut the alarms off.
I'm considering just going back to a good surge protector instead of ups. What do all of you use, surge protector, ups or both? |

Even a small line interactive UPS is way better than any and every surge protector and power bar. You spend thousands on your hardware, why not invest in good power protection? |

outcome
Thanks for everyones suggestions. I upgraded to a new APC. It has Power Chute software and I am able to disable all alarms. I decided the old APC model had been very good to me, so I stuck with APC. At least I will no longer have a freaked out dog during power outages. What we don't do.......
