cpu temp question

I have a cpu temp question.

I have a Athlon 64 X2 4200 dual core processor and I'm running both cores at ~100%. The temps as reported by Everest Home Edition are...

28C Ambient
64C CPU
57C Core 1
57C Core 2

My question is, how can the CPU be nearly 7 degrees higher? According to the documentation I read on the AMD site, the CPU cannot run above 70C. So should I be worried? Which value do I use to determine if my processor is close to overheating?

Thats borderline. The alarm bells for a CPU should be going off when you get to around 60C.

You are not overclocking, right?

Either your CPU heat sink is not seated properly, something is wrong with the fan or the heat sink is dirty. Open up the case and check those things.

The other possibility is that you are getting false temperature readings. Load a second temperature monitoring program like SpeedFan and see what it is telling you and also go into your BIOS and see what it is telling you.

No, I am not overclocking. However, I am running the CPU at 100%. Also, the ambient temp is higher right now since it's summer and I don't have air conditioning (28C is around 82F). When the processor is idle it cools down to about 40C (in an ambient temp of 28C).

I did some reading and discovered that the discrepancy between the CPU temp and the Core temps has to do with the sensors. The CPU temp sensor is on the motherboard and both Core temps are from the sensors on the actual CPU itself and because of their location, they can sometimes disagree with one another. My initial impression is that I should pay more attention to the Core temps since those are actually from sensors located on the processor, right?

Agreed, the core temps are what matters because that is what you are trying to protect by monitoring the temps.

BTW, does it seem like your CPU heat sink fan is running at 100%? You should see it run briefly at 100% when your computer is booting. If you see it run at 100% and then back down as Windows is booting then you know whats going on. If this seems to be the case then you may need to turn off whichever fan speed controller you have, or set it to 100%, as noisy as that may be.

I run Folding@Home on this thing 24/7, which runs the CPU constantly at 100%. I have to run all my fans at 100% to keep the alarms from going off. I tried letting Asus Qfan control them, but it wasn't doing the job.
