ok this is muffed up

i woke up this morning and smelled a burned smell popped open my pc and found my vid card fan laying in the bottom of my case and the clips that hold it on was melted to the vid card heatsink so i am using my onboard vid card atm and i am scared that my pci-e port may have been fried by the overheated vid card is that a possibility or is that unlikly? i mean i have gotten no mobo errors and my mobo around my pci-e port isnt brown or anything like my vod card is lol so can someone tell me the odds of my pci-e port being fried?

Its really hard to say with electronics because there could be damage you don't physically see. I would be a little hesitant to put a working graphics card in that slot to test the slot but I don't see any other way of testing. Look inside the PCI-e port very carefully and look for any sort of physical damage to the contacts or melting of the plastic. Also remove the the motherboard and search both sides thoroughly for any burn marks or other damage. If there is damage then you need to replace the motherboard. If you don't see any damage then perhaps get a hold of an inexpensive graphics card, put it in the slot and hope for the best. If it still works then great!

Yup... it doesn't surprise me with some of the other computer help sites where people get called a noob or an idiot or whatever. One of the rules of this site is that we treat each other with respect.

Stuff like that just happens with electronics and sometimes its impossible to determine exactly what happened. Most graphics cards do have the ability to throttle back the GPU when they start getting hot but it sounds like that is not what happened.

Another thought, check your PSU voltages before putting another graphics card at risk.

Let us know how you fare when you do get a replacement graphics card.
