New external HD and new IDE HD
I'm afraid I may have a very dumb question...I bought a new IDE eternal hard drive enclosure. I have a new WD 250gb IDE HD in it now. It is plug and play --- but do I need to do something to the new HD to be able to use it --- format or????
My systems shows a mass USB device, but nothing shows in the "MY COMPUTER" window? Thanks for listening... |

Set the jumper to CS or remove it. You can't jumper a standalone WD as master.

1. the new disk does not show in "Disk Management", so I can't format it.
2. The jumper was set to the CS setting, so I removed it --- still same result. Not showing in My computer, et, The "safely remove hardware" icon shows down by the clock and when you go to "stop" it it shows as "WDC WD 25 00 USB Device, but that is the only place that it shows up anywhere... |

OK --- I think I got it. I went into Divice Manager and double clicked on this WD 25 00 USB Storage Device. The middle tab told me it was nit "Initialized", so I clicked the "Initializa" button and once initialized, it showed in the "Disk Management" window, and I was able to create a partition and format it. Then it showed in My Computer, and all seems well...
Thanks for the suggestions --- they got me to the right place... |
