Corsair power supplies
Heads up, folks. At the bottom end, Corsair just discontinued the great little CX400 which was made by Seasonic and replaced it with the CX430 made by CWT. It's a piece of JUNK in comparison. The +12v rail is lower capacity and it uses a cheap sleeve bearing fan. Made by CWT, I don't know if I'd trust the caps in it either. If you are looking for a low end PSU, I think you would be better off with an Antec Basiq, BP, or Earthwatts than this thing.

So much for the safe brand...

Interesting... the CX400 is the one I just got to replace my failed SmartPower.
From your post I take it you think the original CX400 is a decent budget PSU? There's still plenty of them on Amazon, and I was thinking of getting another for my own system. |

It is sad that a company can throw away a reputation that took years to achieve all in the name of saving pennies. I realize that at least now the others are still the same. but no longer can one say Corsairs are good without stating that this one is not.
I read a few reviews on my Antec Sonata case and at ;east one indicates the Earthwatts PSU has been replaced with a less good one. Any truth to that? I haven't taken mine out of the case nor seen. I hope not.

Yes, the original CX400 is an excellent power supply, it's made by Seasonic.
The Sonata 3 PSU is either an Earthwatts 500 made by Seasonic or an Earthwatts 500D Green made by Delta. They are both good manufacturers. |

I'm a little surprised Corsair would do this. The additional money to be made selling junk at a higher profit margin is not worth the risk of damaging their excellent reputation.
Corsair only has a two year warranty on it compared to a five or seven year warranty on most of their PSU's. Corsair is effectively saying they don't trust it either. Good reputations are much harder to earn than bad reputations.

There may be more to it then people realize. Perhaps they weren't selling enough of the 400's to make any profit. Most people now days go for 500+. Personally i'm running a 600W and a 750W supply in two machines. I went with a Corsair TX-750 because it would run much quieter then if I went with a 500 or 550 supply.
Of course I would've preferred if they just got rid of the lower power one and kept everything quality across the board so you knew if it said Corsair, it must be good. On a side note, I hate how Corsair runs their forums. You are not allowed to mention any other brand names. If you do the forum turns it to all *******. I stopped posting there because of it. |

Company run forums are only there for cheer leading the products. They are pretty much worthless.

I have to partially disagree.
EVGA's forums are pretty good. |

This isn't the first stupid thing Corsair has done. A few years back their memory was being quite crappy and they had lots of returns. I never trusted the company after that, and stopped recommending them.

I used a CX400 (cost $29.00 CDN after rebate) in my Mom's new build. It was D.O.A. The replacement seems to be a bit healthier.
