getting headphones to work in front jack?
For some reason when I insert my headphones into the front panel on my computer tower the sound will not work. I have to go to the back of my tower and take out the current audio line that plays out into the speakers and then insert my headphone jack. This is really annoying. I can though listen to cds through my front jack but no other audio comes in. does anyone know how to fix this problem? Thanks.

It would help to know exactly what it is you are dealing with. Is this a proprietary computer or a custom built system? If it's proprietary, who makes it?

Hi bhome83,
Is this front earphone jack port found on the CD-ROM drive? That one only works when you want to listen to a music CD playing in the CD-ROM. Any other sounds, like MP3's or sound files on the hard drive, won't play through that port. You'll have to plug the earphones into the speaker or output port on the soundcard. I think I remember a company that made a front multimedia panel that connected wires from the soundcard ports from the back of the PC to the panel fitted in the 5.25" drive bay. I forget the name of the device and I'm not sure if it's still available.  Cricket

If the front panel jack is on the cd reader itself, then you don't have a problem. The computer is doing what it is supposed to do. The front panel jack on cdroms is specifically made to listen to audio cds. No other sounds will play thru it. There is no way around this that I know of.

$1.50 solution: Get a Y mini plug jack from Radio Shack. Plug it into the out of the sound card. Keep both the speakers and headphones hooked at all times.

Or you can go here and get a front port assembly that brings PS2, Headphones, Microphone, volume, gameport, and USB/Firewire to the front of the tower. As long as you have an open drive bay.
