Anyone have any experience with Envision flat panel. Staples has a EN7100 17" for $549.00 that has caught my eye. I'm probably going to start ordering parts first of week for a new system and I want a flat panel If there is any way I can swing it, and I believe I could live with one for less than $600.00 if the quality is acceptable. Awfully hard for me to spend that much for a monitor when excellent flat screen CRT's can be had for around $300.00 or less.

having sold Envision products at my local CompUSeless fer a while now, i can say this with no uncertainty:
1. if games are what you do, flat panels are not something to look at (in my opinion anyway) with the possible exception of the Apple Cinema Display ($3000, only works on current Mac towers) 2. if games are not what you do, then flat panels are OK, however be aware (people may disagree with me on this): Envision = Government Cheese. Ya can eat the government cheese, you can live on the government cheese, but, it just isn't a steak, ya know? Envision is a brand name i have always describes as "adequate." it does the job for cheap. but, its not a great product. 3. (this is opinion) for less money get a CRT, better refresh, better mHz, better color accuracy, better everything. only get a TFT if you are either a). on a boat have have zero room for a CRT, or b). on a computer 18 hours a day (i find that for VERY long periods of time my laptop screen is much easier on my eyes.) -shecky (OMG! this is my tenth post! do i getta set of steak knives?) |

Not sure about envision, but:

My TFT has a response time of 50ms. . it is not one of the fastest, but everyone who played on my TFT said that he didn't notice any difference to his CRT. Some were also ready to sell the CRT to buy a TFT. 2. better mHz: nonsense. CRTs FLICKER, therefore they need high refresh rate (85 Hz and more). TFTs have the better technology, they don't flicker at all, so there is no need for more than 60Hz. 3. better color accuracy: This is true. Anyway the flat panel's color accuracy is not bad. Therefore anyone who is interested in a flat panel should take a look at the specific model and see if he likes it or not. 4. better everything. This is wrong. TFTs have a far better and clearer picture when operating at the native resolution. If it's fast enough (most today's TFTs are) they are very good for gaming and viewing videos. In my opinions TFTs are better (otherwise I wouldn't own one for 1 year and a half now. . .). @confused: You know that a 17" TFT is like a 19" TFT ? A 15" TFT would be like a 17" CRT. Just to let you know in case that you didn't know yet. . . You can also get good TFTs from Samsung. They're not expensive anymore. RJ

Thanks for the replies, I'm not a gamer (maybe a little Myst or Riven now and then) but I do like the space saved, less power and weight of a TFT. Sams also has one, a KDS RD7 with a response time of 35 for under $600.00. And thanks RJ I did know about the screen size.

Well the problem with the regular CRT is space. I have a oak rolltop that it is going on. I was going to get another oak rolltop built for PC's, but I just don't have the room in my family room to put another desk (I even took out two pieces of furniture), so the tower is going under, and a flat panel on top of my current desk and probably wireless KB and mouse. Either that or sell my current desk and get a new one that will accommodate a CRT. Ideally that would be the way to go but this is a nice desk I don't want to part with if I can help it. I mess with this too much and I will have more in the furniture than the PC.

Personally I prefer CRTs. Those flat panels look like crap to me.

Actually I don't know why some people want to force people who want to buy a TFT to buy a CRT. CRT is out here. He stated that there is no space and he likes that and BTW the TFT has a better picture in its native res. I will never go back to CRT again. If you need color saturation, ok, then buy the CRT. I like picture quality, therefore I bought the TFT. None of both are really 'perfect', but in many cases the TFT is the better choice, and BTW prices dropped alot, TFTs are not way too expensive anymore. RJ |
