Modem/PCI Hardware?
We'e installing an SM56 Modem (ye, we know it's just an email computer though) on a computer that had an HSP56 in it previously. We removed the modem and software and the new modem is in slot 2. The first message we get is that windows detects and will install new pci hardware. We have the disk with drivers and it goes through it and says it can't find the driver. We then cancel and it then finds the modem driver and installs it. It works, but then when we reboot it goes thru the same process and if we don't cancel we get an exclamation mark under Other Devices in Device Manager. This doesn't stop the modem from working, but apparently our installation process isn't right or we wouldn't be getting the excl mark. Thanks in advance.

Check you Modem disk to see if it has a setup program. If it does then the way you install it will be to close the Windows Hardware detection window and then run the setup from the disk. You will also need to have your Windows disk handy since it will probably want it during installation.
Before you do this, do not forget to go and remove the modem from the device manager. |

Thanks for the reply Morris. No, it doesn't actually have a setup program. I just uninstalled it again and it found new pci hardware and I let it auto select and it wouldn't install, so then I tried to browse the cd and choose, but it wouldn't do it. I then cancelled and it selected the right driver and installed, but I still get the excl mark in other devices, yet the modem installs and works fine and is listed under modems?? Thanks.

Duh, forgot to disable the onboard modem in the bios. I thought about it at one point and didn't do it. Works fine now.
