The consensus in this forum is Western Digital.

They are fast, reliable and have excellent warranties. More specifically, WD Black drives for speed and Green drives for quiet and low heat.

Presuming you have the data backed up (in case it fails), download WD's diagnostics and run them on the drive.

But if not, back it up before running diagnostics! If the drive is starting to fail, diagnostics can take it out.

It's an external drive. If it's connected by usb, I don't believe the WD diagnostic utilities won't run on it. If connected by esata, they will run fine. Since this is an external drive, it could be a problem with the sata to usb hardware or a problem with the drive itself. You would have to remove the drive from the enclosure to test for sure. If it's a prebuilt external drive from WD, opening up the case will void the warranty. When prebuilt external units fail or start clicking, it's frequently a problem with sata to usb hardware or power supply for the unit rather than the hard drive itself.

The Windows version of WD's diagnostics will run on a USB drive.
