What does the motherboard manual say about it? they should cross reference a fan manufacturer and part number since it is a part unique to the board.

Most are 3 pin using a white molex shell that matches with a removable part, generally white also.

Worst case is hooking the fan up to +12 and running it wide open all the time.

Don't worry about it. It will still work fine. The fourth pin is for a special type of voltage control, Pulse Width Modulation which regulates speed which is not absolutely necessary. Depending on the BIOS, your fan will either run at full speed all the time or you will be able to regulate it. Either way you will be fine.

If you want this this type of speed control then you need a CPU fan with a four pin connector. This is the only way with certainty that you will be able to regulate your CPU fan speed.

David, is that supposed to work with programs like Cool 'n' Quiet? Whereas; if you don't have a cpu fan with a 4pin connector Cool 'n' Quiet won't operate properly?

I'm not sure if Q-fan or Cool N Quiet requires that fourth pin. glc probably knows.

I'm looking around for an answer.

No idea - I always use 4 pin fans on 4 pin headers and 3 pin fans on 3 pin headers.
