S3 Trio 3d/2x AGP Graphics cards
We have a number of graphics cards using the above mentioned chips. Two of these cards have definately failed and some of the other machines using these experience frequent blue screens/total crashes.
Is anyone aware of a reliability issue with these or had similar problems? Systems are Win98 and NT4 (problems on both) and all drivers are up to date. |

Howdy,
S3 used to be a great manufacturer of vid cards. They took on Tseng labs and beat their chipset in video speed. Tseng labs as a company failed some years back. S3 began infiltrating the PCI/AGP video scene as a "budget" card maker and to compete, they stopped active research it seems. Any more, their stuff is well below par and their drivers somewhat shabby in design. I used to be an S3 fan for 2D video but have since changed my stance. S3 now stands along with Trident and other "low end" makers building the 25.00 video card. You get exactly what you pay for with these puppies. Note: These views are mine alone, my humble opinion. I make no intent to "flame" or otherwise "slandor" any particular company or its product(s). I speak from my experiences only which may or may not reflect others opinions. I offer this from the "what its worth department". My views DO NOT represent those of this nor any other site. I alone am responsible what I say or do not say. The above was added because certain companies have contacted me regarding their product(s) and how "I" feel and my experiences with that product(s). The walls have ears.

Thanks for your opinion, I had my suspicions that these may not be the greatest as I have been experimenting using different cards in the problem machines with some success.

Let me put it this way, when I was working for a distributor as a system builder, we received in a shipment of 100 S3 cards. Out of that, I was having problems with some systems, so I tested each card and ended up sending 56 of them back.
