If you are trying to create a boot disk have windows create it and then restart that should work fine. What exactly are you trying to do?

I am setting up this comp. for the first time. I followed instructions to set all the Bios settings, and the next step is to reboot, with Windows 98 start up disk. Well I am stuck here because the disk won't work. Any other suggestions?

jackel_2: Does it try to access the disk? Check to make sure the floppy drive comes before the hard drive in the boot sequence.

I would also check the disk to make sure the command file is on there because if it isn't then you have your problem. windows probably had a problem writing the disk when it created it. Get a new disk and make another bootdisk from the machien you are on now.

yes, the floppy loads first and tries to access the disk... still the same results. "non-system disk..."

It doesn't matter what OS you're currently using, just run the .exe and have a floppy in the drive, it will copy the needed files to the disk. Then take that disk and put in the other computer and start it up.

that site is where I downloaded it from, and it does not run... after I download it onto a disk, then I should just be able to start it up right? It still says non-system disk...

Well it is safe to say that it is not the System disk that is the problem. Same results everytime... "Non-system disk..." So if the disk's are ok, what could be causing the error otherwise?

Downloading ME startup...
All my bios setting look correct, what parts of the Bios would cause such an error? I followed the PC MEchanic "How to build a PC..." directions, but some settings aren't there. Most everything else was already sett properly. I'll try the ME disk, and we'll see what happens! |

Hi jackel_2,
Exactly how are you making the startup/boot floppy from those files you downloaded? Are you just placing the file on a formatted floppy and trying to boot with that disk? Or are you executing the file (double clicking it) so that it can create the boot floppy? If you're sure you're making the boot floppy correctly, it's possible the floppy drive is defective. Can you borrow a know working floppy from another system? Cricket

I think you probably have the floppy cable hooked up incorrrectly. Pin 1 is the red stripe and the drive goes on the end after the twist.
Will it boot from the CD? |

Definitaly sounds like it has to do with the floppy drive / cables...
follow the advice given by glc and others and, unless its a bad drive, you shoud be ok Eric |
