What's a TCP configuration?

I've tried to install my dsl software for my newly installed winXP but it wouldn't do that. It says my NIC ehternet adapter is not TCP configured. What does it mean? What's TCP?

According to pacbell I need to install it the winXP way. Tell me what's TCP.
