how to make new computer work

I bought a pentium 166mhz computer at a garage sale for $20 today. the guy said there is nothing on the hard drive. I took it home and turned it on and I got a message, "non-system disk or disk error". I'm starting to learn, but I still don't know much about computers. does this message mean I don't have an operating system? I thought I would at least get a dos prompt or something. if anyone has any help to offer I'd really appreciate it.

Yes, there's nothing on the drive.

Been there done that all night last night Reedimus. Maybe if you go to page 2 of the PC hardware threads, Title.... System Disk II you might get some help as to how you can fix that problem. Dr. Zaius was very helpful last night.

Reedimus: See if you can get some DOS disks, or even better, a boot disk and a Win95 CD. I wouldn't try any other OS on that system (unless if course you want to learn Linux ). Like jackel_2 mentioned, check out his thread on making a boot disk.

Win98 will run fine on a Pentium 166. Compared to a new machine it will run slow, but everything does when compared to newer machines. I have an old Infinia 166. That was my first jump to the "groundbreaking" Win9x GUI. In some aspects, the 166 runs surprisingly fast, at least to me.

Any boot disk with CD drivers should do the job. Then you can fdisk and format the drive for a clean start. There should be a PCMech article explaining these. If not, search the forums or ask.

Respectfully,

Demosthenes

thanks for the replies! I'm installing mandrake 8.1 right now. for some reason when he said it was empty I didn't think he meant *empty*. now if I just shut my eyes and pretend it is 1996 I've got a kick ass system for $20!
