You should enable the CPU/Memory desktop gadget to keep tabs on the usage of those. Most likely, some process or application is guzzling down system resources. You can also use the Task Manager to check that. Press Ctrl-Shift-Esc to bring up the Task Manager and click on the Processes tab, then click on the Memory column to sort them processes by memory usage and see what is using how much.

That can also be a hard drive that's too full and/or a bad pagefile.

He's got Windows 7, though.
Just right click on the drive in Computer, then select Properties, then click the Tools tab and click on the Check button. If it's the system drive it'll tell you it can't run the check whilst Windows is running, and ask you if you want to schedule it for the next time the PC boots up: click on Yes and then reboot the machine. |

I looked at the picture he posted and seeing the visual themes I deducted it was either Vista or 7. Chkdsk still works on Vista/7; and note that it was revamped to comply with the newer version of NTFS. You can use the Vista/7 version of chkdsk to diagnose/repair discs with XP, but not the other way around.

OK my computer has gotten to a point these past days, where is not booting. When I cold start it it gives me 2 options on that black screen to boot the computer on "safe mode" or start the start up repair. I have done the safe mode part and it won't get past the Microsoft logo loading part. The start up repair I have tried several times already and it keeps telling me it can't seem to repair anything. Right now I am trying to do the start up repair again and is taking a while so far it been 8 min.

Download and run memory and hard drive diagnostics.
Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool HDD diags from the HDD manufacturer You should download them with another computer and burn bootable CD's to run them. |

Thanks GLC will download it on a Flash Drive I have now for school which is a PNY 4GB. I am not a fan of flash drives I was going to buy a portable HDD but I was tight on money so I went with a flash drive from wally world.
So the other day I remember I had not back up my stuff before realizing it wasn't going to boot no more. I had some important documents in it I needed. So I pull out that kit I had bought last time I had to recover my mom friend computer info. I plug it all in except the power. I then proceeded to plug in power HDD started working and a format screen pop up so it got format by itself and I could then see what was inside. (My documents) Keep in mind I was using my school laptop for this since I had no other computer to do it with. I have not had NO PROBLEM whatsoever with my school laptop. After I had transfer some of my files to my esternal HDD I also had plugged in to the laptop, I then eject everything first properly then unplugged my PC HDD and finally my External HDD. All of suddenly the laptop went in to a blue screen with black or white letters don't recall exactly on the letters and it said it was on a protection mode. Basically the laptop crashed turned off and it turned back on without a problem. I have not plug in none of my HDD to my laptop again, this tells me my PC HDD has a bad file or a virus like GLC mentioned. Now my question is would the HDD diag clean the HDD up? Is there any way of cleaning up that bad file or I was thinking in wiping out my PC HDD again. But there is still some documents in there I still need. |

No, the diagnostics are used to test the hard drive for problems - such as bad sectors. If it fails diagnostics, it needs to be replaced.

So after 3 months not using my PC I have to say is ridiculous since I haven't had time to sit down and fix it until now. So right now I have my WDCB HDD plug in to my school laptop I already retrieved my files. I am tying to see which Diag should I download and how to run it.
WD Support / Downloads / SATA & SAS / WD Caviar Black Can I do it using the laptop? Also I have not turn my PC at all for the past months so I am not sure if it will boot or not. On the MemTest GLC provided I am completely lost which file to download and run. I am assuming for this test my PC will have to boot firt and be running in order to run the test? I am not familiar with how any of these test run I never done this before. |

So I had the wrong file downloaded and right one didn't have an ISO available so I plugged my WDCB to the laptop and I ran the quick test and it passed now is running the extended test is going to take several hours. If the HDD comes out fine from this test the next option I have in mind is to write zero in the whole HD and start all over again fresh install.
I am also thinking in doing a 200GB partion in my HDD will need help in how to do partions never done this before either. |

So my HDD passed the diag test after 17 hours. But I decided to write zero on it but didn't do the whole HDD instead I picked the 1st option which was write zero on the first million sectors or something like that. After it was done the laptop is not reading the HDD no more so is not poping up. Seems like it needs to be format??
I wanted to do the partions from the laptop before installing W7 fresh again. HELP? |

No need to partition and format before installing Windows - the Windows setup can set the first partition, then you can use Disk Management after Windows is installed to partition and format the rest of the drive.

Ok thanks GLC for chimming in, I started running the windows memory diag is on test 22 and so far no problems looks like it was probably a virus that made my PC crash and wasn't booting no more.
Also what partion size would you recommend to play with Linux in the future? |

I'd stick a second drive in there to play with Linux.

Update
So I reinstall W7U since there was no way of getting by the booting problem. My HDD diag came out fine and window memory diag didn't bring anything unusual. So right now I have been dealing with the W7 updates and restaring the PC. I will be installing MSE. But since I been reading around here I noticed a lot of you guys are not only running MSE but also CCleaner, malwarebytes, defragler so I am also going to install those. My backup external HDD of 300GB is there any safe way of getting it scanned and which programmed is best to be full scan for any virus crap? I am a bit scared if I plugged in my ex HDD to my PC it will infect my PC as well but I need to scan my HDD. |

Hotplug it, then you can scan it with MSE and Malwarebytes.
