printer installs but will not work

computer/printer: Dell Optiplex GX 270/Canon mf4350(laser)(win XP sp2)-------------------------------------

Installed drivers>rebooted

will not print test nor any other page

when hit "print"..total silence--printer does not activate

on boot up--get "usb device not recognized" (on windows xp desktop)--i suspect this refers to the printer??

print que menu shows printer installed reinstalled all drivers--same scenario..

same printer works fine on other machines-so its something with the GX 270 (P4 2.2/1.5gb ram) (hardware conflict etc?)

what are possible causes and solutions?

thanx.

Have you tried unplugging the USB cable and hotplugging it into a different USB port?

Not with Canon, but others:
SP3 fixed one.
Latest drivers from manufacturer fixed another.
Ripping everything out and reinstalling drivers with printer disconnected fixed several.

This may be the key. Historically, the correct way to install many USB devices, especially with older operating systems, has been to install drivers, THEN hotplug it (or shut down, plug it, restart) and let "plug and play" finish. The device won't be recognized properly without preinstalled drivers. If you don't have it, you should download the printer manual and see what it says for XP.

You must have to check with printer properties as that the port settings will be set on USB port.
Then goto general tab in printer properties and click for the print test page.
