vertical lines on laptop display
This Dell studio 1737 has suddenly out of the blue developed vertical lines all the way across the display. The lines are really noticeable going through the desktop icons and you can barely make out the text under them. It is not a driver issue as I have rolled back and updated them and it makes no difference. Actually you can see the lines during startup going through the Dell logos and stuff and they are still there in safe mode so drivers are not the issue. If you plug it into an external monitor the display is fine with no vertical lines anywhere. Apparently no one else has had this problem before as google is not helpful at all this time.
Is it likely the display itself or some other part in the display such as the inverter? I have seen symptoms of an inverter going out before and this just doesn't appear to be the case with this one. |

Double check the connection to the motherboard. It may not be seated firmly. Inspect the wire carefully looking for a crimp or cut

The cables all look fine to me, no pinches or cuts and they are seated firmly. I'm thinking try the inverter first since they can be had for cheap. If it's not it I have an extra inverter.

The Toshiba Satellite Pro and the Dell XPS of a few years back used the same screens and suffered from this problem. It is mainly an over heating issue and usually by this stage (vertical black lines) the screen is broken.
Try a new inverter board by all means, but from experience you are going to have to bite the bullet and change the screen.

The inverter is only for the backlight. That is not your problem, the screen needs to be replaced.

UPDATE. Yep, the screen was bad. I was shopping around online for a replacement and remembered I had a junked HP dv9700 in my pile. The screen from it fit perfectly minus a few screws holding the screen in place at the top. It's still nice and snug though and the video display is perfect now. Thanks again everybody.
