dialup modem tries to connect but doesnt quite
dialup modem is a usb called trendnet tfm-560u h/w b1.1
have the proper driver i am only having an issue in windows xp 64 bit sp2. never had an issue using it in win7. in both cases i am connecting to netzero which of course sets all the parameters for dial up connection. one thing that may be of interest is that windows xp calls the modem an agere modem, but no agere driver will work with the modem, only a very specific trendnet driver will. different h/w versions of the same model of modem wont even work, which is why i know ive got the right driver. i tried about 4 different drivers i thought would work before i found the right driver thanks for the help, it's important i get this working otherwise i wouldnt be posting about a dialup connection... but you dont see these threads very often anymore

There are no XP drivers that I can find for that. Windows 7 only.

It definitely is supposed to be compatible with Windows XP. This is where I pulled the driver and manual from. TRENDnet | Downloads | Modems | TFM-560U (Version B1)
Is there a windows service in xp that effects dial up connection? This OS is what I use for audio recording; a while back I stripped pretty much everything out including some services. I never thought I would need to connect to the net with this OS again after i set up a dual boot. Now I *desperately* need to update xp to get a new piece of music gear to work with xp. But...I am guessing if this was related to a service, my modem wouldnt even dial out, let alone come about an inch from properly connecting to the remote pc. I meant to elaborate on the subject line in my OP...this is what it sounds like with the modem speaker on. the first 10 seconds are normal pc to pc noise. then it starts to get a little weird. loud beep, quieter beep, a few seconds of static. this sequence of sound over and over again, precisely the same, a bunch of times, then just one long beep and the modem times out. So I assumed with the modem coming that close to establishing a connection, there might be a small tweak I can make in the settings that would fix this. i was hoping someone who used a modem in xP might have had this happen before. But Im guessing it's way more specific of an issue...as in, connected to this modem. Although I definitely have used this modem before in xp..in fact, on this same os install..but it has been a really long time. Thanks all! |

I found the same link but as you can see there are no XP drivers. I think you are going to need a different modem. Maybe someone will know different but that is my recommendation.

I have NEVER had good luck with USB dialup modems.
There is a XP 64 driver in this package: http://downloads.trendnet.com/tfm-56...r_tfm-560u.zip |

Do you have a low-pass filter available? or 2 in series?
Not familiar with that modem but those I've dalt with are prone to connection issues with noisy lines and sometimes you can't hear noise that is enough to cause problems. |

hmm..yeah i have quite a few filters that are used on phone lines when you have dsl ... is that what you mean? i will try that out.
makes no sense, though, that the same computer, the same usb modem, works perfectly fine under windows 7 64...and cant establish a connection under xp pro sp2 64...its gotta be software right? |

I would hesitate to use a USB modem and that is not to insinuate a judgement on having or buying one. They are problematic is all. The master, George seemed to find a solution for you to try. Give it a go and save yourself 20 -30 bones in the best case scenario.

the saga continues. the pci modem i found is called genica pctel modem pci bus v92/56kbps
model # a-1688 Drivers for this are all over the net, and the packages appear to be all the same. comes with an exe for installing drivers and 3 different dll that appear to be drivers. xp 64 does not recognize the drivers as being compatible with the modem, which in device manager is simply labeled as PCI modem with a yellow ! in windows 7 i was able to connect to the net with the usb modem , and do an online search for the driver through the new hardware wizard, it found nothing, but there doesnt appear to be a driver for windows 7 for this thing. i only really need it to work with xp anyway |

Pctel modems are garbage.
A tip: Quite often, Win 2003 drivers will work in XP 64. This modem is verified as having a XP 64 driver: Newegg.com - U.S. Robotics USR5670 Fax modem 56Kbps PCI Bus (Plug & Play) V.92 56K ITU standard V.90 56K ITU standard V.34 33.6K ITU standard Compatible with most ITU and Bell standards down to 300 bps V.80 video conferenc http://www.usr.com/support/5670/5670...er2003-x64.exe Win 7-64 has a built-in driver for it. |
