24" Monitor Recommendation
I've been looking on Newegg at the Asus 24 inch monitors. They seem to always be rotating a different model through the sales, but I can't really tell the difference in the specs of one monitor from the other.
This one is currently on sale: Newegg.com - ASUS VW246H Glossy Black 24" 2ms(GTG) HDMI Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 ASCR 20000:1 (1000:1) Built-in Speakers I'd like to spend under $200. What should I be looking for in choosing between the various options? They all seem the same to me. Is there a good, better, best when looking at these that I should be aware of - other than just price? Finally, I'm not wedded to going with Asus - it just seems like they are highly recommended in these forums. |

I am partial to back-lit monitors and this is the one I sell to customers who want a big display. They are rock solid and have gorgeous color.

Thanks for the recommendation.
How does that compare to this one: Newegg.com - ASUS VS Series VS247H-P Black 23.6" 2ms LED Backlight Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 50000000:1 (ASCR) Which is currently on sale for $160 after entering a promo code. Rex |

0.4" smaller and a bit brighter, otherwise it looks pretty much the same.

At $40 cheaper I think I'm willing to loose 0.4"! It seems like a pretty good deal.

Since the resolution is still the same, you are not losing anything. A monitor with the same resolution and a larger screen is only valuable if you want to view it at a greater distance. For up close work, a smaller screen with the same resolution can look clearer since you are less likely to see the individual pixels. A 0.4 inch difference will not be noticeable. But if the difference in monitor size were a few inches and the resolution were the same, a difference in clarity might be noticeable. Ideally you want your eyes just far enough away from the screen until your ability to see individual pixels is barely noticeable or just barely fades away. For my monitors this is about 30 inches.
It seems monitor models come and go all the time with differences in the screens being minimal. I think it mostly has to do with other features like video ports etc. It may also partially be a marketing game that attempts to make the consumer feel they have a brand new model and therefore this model is better than the model it replaces. Sort of like what Detroit used to do with automobiles each year.
