In the most basic terms- it's a helper. If you need to move a pile of bricks it's the young boy you hired to help you.(single core w/hyperthreading) If you just want to get it it done you'd hire another man.(dual core)

Hyper-threading - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It is only usable if the OS supports multiple processors, the Intel CPU has it and can only be used if the application was written to utilize it. A lot of applications can not use it, even a lot of game applications.
