How to find speed of my hard drive
I have a western digital caviar 102AA eide drive, its 10GB. Its been in my computer for about 2 years and I'm trying to figure out the rpm of it. I don't know if its 5400 or 7200 rpm. I can't find this info in bios or after looking in sandra. I took the drive out and looked and it doesn't say on the drive itself either. I went to WD website and couldn't find my hard drive there either.
Would anyone know how I can find this info out? Or maybe someone has this drive as well and knows. Also, what is the average life expectancy for a western digital hard drive? I'm thinking of maybe using this drive or the 20G drive (both western digital) that I have in this computer and putting one of them into a new computer to be built later. Thanks Pete |

Just do a google search with the model number and you should find a website posting the specs. Not hard.

2 years old and 10gb, it's a safe bet it is NOT a 7,200.
For a new system there is generally one choice these days, UATA-100 @ 7,200 rpm and about 30gb. The smallest sold these days is 20G, go with the flow and get at least 40g, they dont cost much more. Personally I use IBM drives, but a WD should last the upgrade life of a system these days at least, they should get 3-4 years, who can tell these days, it may last ten minutes or ten years. |

How do you determine what speed the HDD is actually operating at (in a general sense) based on your hardware configuration? Is there a utility that will transfer data packets back and forth to the HDD and report the results?
