Nvidia Geforce FX 5200

A buddy from work gave me his computer to work on, as he was having some issues.. This is a guy who never had a computer before, and one was given to him.. He currently has a Dell Dimension 4600 with windows 7 home premium.. Well I have it up and running it needed a good cleaning as it looked like it was cleaned in 10yrs LOl.. I also replaced his cmos battery, did all system updates etc.. The one I can't find is one for this video card.. Nvidia says it can't find a driver. Sooo were can I find one? It is unusual for Nvidia to not have a driver available.. Under disply properties it says the dirve is from 10/06. Windows update didn't seem to have one as well.

Also I added to sticks 2x512 of corsair value select ram. He also had 2x512 Kingston ram.. So far they seem to be playing nice, but is it ok to mix the two? They are the same DDR 400.

Apparently, Nvidia doesn't see a lot of upside for making a windows 7 driver for this old of a graphics card. I assume he has this vista driver currently installed:

ForceWare Release 95

Given the age and capabilities of that box, I can't see it running windows 7 or vista very well, even with the ram maxed out. He would probably be better off with winxp or linux. For winxp, nvidia has a more current driver for that card:

ForceWare Release 95

There's also a fairly recent linux driver for that card:

NVIDIA DRIVERS 173.14.31 Certified

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Nvidia to release and updated windows 7 driver for your GeForce FX 5200 card. Units having hardware that old are not suitable for running either vista or windows 7 and I assume Nvidia feels the same way. Vista and windows 7 are way too resource intensive for that type of old hardware.

Windows 7 should have a native driver for that card.

True that, but I was just used to being able to find drivers. O well live and learn.. Well at least his machine will be better than when I got it.. My god, the thing look like someone use a bucket loader, and filled it up with dirt LOL...
