SSD Upgrade for Gaming
Hi all. I was wondering if it is worth it to upgrade to SSD now? I am running the Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST31000528AS 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive now and was just wanting to speed things up. Any advice on which SSD to buy?

My MB is MSI NF750-G55 AM3 NVIDIA nForce 750a SLI HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard and my CPU is AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor. But....I recently won an AMD FX-8120 Zambezi 3.1GHz Socket AM3+ 125W Eight-Core Desktop Processor FD8120FRGUBOX black edition that I would like to use. So I am not above upgrading my MB as well if needed. I run two GeForce 560ti at the moment and they are both rather new so those I would like to use in the upgraded system. My memory is also new. I am running CORSAIR XMS3 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Desktop Memory Model CMX8GX3M2A1333C9. I have two sets for a total of 16gb of memory.

IF you want to upgrade for faster boot times and a little boost in overall system performance than I would go with at least a 120 gb Intel 520 SSD and load the OS and applications on it and use the seagate for data.
Is it worth it? The performance increase is noticable but at the end of the day are you willing to fork over the money? |

Thats the big question. Do I want to fork out the money or not. I am really leaning towards yes. Its been a couple years since I built this system so its prolly ready for an overhaul. I clearly have some thinking to do. Thanks for the feedback.

No point in getting an Intel 520 with that motherboard - it's not a SATA 6.0 board.

You coud use the Intel 520 with a new MB and put your FX-8120 Zambezi to good use. We're talking under $500 bucks to update your system, that's not too bad.
At this point you might want to investigate how much benefit you may get from the ssd and an updated processor. How's that Deneb holding up to your usage? How many programs do you try to run at a time? Maybe look at some benchmarks and compare the two processors. ![]() Newegg.com - ASUS Crosshair V Formula AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Gaming Motherboard with 3-Way SLI/CrossFireX Support and UEFI BIOS Newegg.com - Intel 520 Series Cherryville SSDSC2CW120A3K5 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) $394.98 in the cart w/shipping

With games a SSD will speed up load times but it will not speed up frame rates. Faster frame rates and being able to set your game at higher settings is mostly a function of your graphics card...unless you are using an older CPU, which can cause newer games to drag.

One more question....I want to go ahead and upgrade my memory from 16 to 32gb. Can you guys suggest some good high performance sticks for me? Thanks.

Corsair Vengence has been the most reccomended lately.
You may want to hold off on the memory and see what your usage is. I've got 8gig installed and I rarely go over 3gig. If you really want to update the memory I'd go for a bit faster and less sticks as opposed to more quantity. By using two sticks instead of four you get a slight performance boost because two sticks is easier on the memory controller than four stciks of memory. More memory isn't going to do squat for your gaming rig. ![]() Newegg.com - CORSAIR Vengeance LP 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CML16GX3M2A1600C10 |

You also need Win 7 Pro or Ultimate to support over 16gb ram. I would not upgrade your ram, that would be a waste of money.
