Rebuild Laptop

I have a laptop (FL90) built by PowerPro and I am fairly certain the mobo is kaput (very dissatisfied with PowerPro but that is another story). Trashing it seems so wasteful and I am thinking about rebuilding it to function for a specific task, i.e. connected to my flat panel to watch Netflix movies. Is DIY rebuilding a laptop something I can do with the help of this forum?

Can't say that I've ever heard of power pro... What are the specs of the machine?

Keep in mind you can purchased used-working lappies with 2gig cpu's for a 100 bucks or less.

But, if you can find a replacement mobo AND a manual that gives great detailed info on how to take it apart - you could do it.

I stand corrected, my laptop was built by powernotebooks.com. Thanks for your advice.

Nice specs. What makes you think the mobo is dead?

Will not boot. Fan comes on for a few seconds and it shuts down. I put in a new HD, installed Win XP and it operated. Shut it down and next day it went right back to the same problem. Only get black screen.

It's possibly just a cooked Nvidia video adapter - which MIGHT be socketed and removable.

Have you opened it up and blown all the dust out of it?

I've only opened the HD compartment. I will try your advice re blowing out the dust. Not sure I will know what a video adapter will look like. Maybe it will have Nvidia stamped on it.
