HD crashed ???

My boys Acer aspire HD crashed after only after 1 YR. If I buy a new drive do I have to buy a new copy of win 7 also ?His windows reregistration # is still on the old LT.

No, as long as you have media to reinstall it, you can use that key.

If he never made the eRecovery disks, you are going to have to get a set of recovery disks from Acer. Your key generally won't work with a generic copy of Windows, and you would need to try to find drivers.

no media. could not recover anything from the bad drive. old drive sounds like a chain saw. Any where I can get win 7 not full bore price . What do all these fols do that get bad hardware. Pay for windows twice.

recovery disk in Windows says "can not read master boot record
.

If I buy a new HD WILL THE RECOVERY DISC WORK ?

I was talking about an OEM version of Windows. That's what we used at the shop all the time to reinstall the OS on new (replacement) drives. Retail versions won't work.

What's this recovery disc you're mentioning?

My boy made them when he got the PC new but of course they will not work o this bad drive.

I have not bought a HD in years any one have a suggestion for something around 500-600 gig for the Acer aspire . The bad one was a WD.

Laptop? Are you sure it's not still on warranty?
