computer freezing - thoughts?

All,

About two weeks ago I replaced my radeon 4870 with this card that I picked up from Fry's:

Newegg.com - DIAMOND 7850PE52G Radeon HD 7850 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card

At the same time, I cloned my Windows installation onto a WD 1 terabyte drive that I had been running as a slave and swapped over to it as my master drive (my old master drive was getting old).

I've been gaming on my pc this weekend, and have had the entire computer freeze three times, each requiring a hard reboot to rectify. Each time I have either had a game open, or minimized in the background after already having played it, while surfing the web.

Does this sound like a HD issue or a possible issue with my video card? Is there any way to check either without having to remove either the card or drive to test?

Also, I can't seem to find the wattage required by the video card - Newegg lists it as needing 500 watts minimum, which I have, but an actual number would be nice to see if I'm exceeding my power supply's limit. My PSU is the 750watt in my sig.

Let me know if anyone has any ideas! Thanks!

Follow maxrat's lead. Additionally, check that your CPU is firmly in place on the motherboard. You may be overheating? Double check video card by swapping with a known working one.

My guess, the new video card is overloading the PSU and causing the computer to freeze. Substitute a higher wattage PSU and you will find out quickly if this is true.

Even if it's NOT the PSU, it's always good to have a spare PSU on hand. My advise, buy a new 650w PSU, install it, and keep the old PSU as the spare.

Also... uninstall the OLD ATI drivers....

Navigate to the ProgramFilesx86 and DELETE the ATI folder reboot and then install teh new drivers...

I have had some minor conflicts at times installing new driver on top of old ones and a Delete of the file has fixed it... maybe something to look at but looking in the event viewer will give you some direction....

I doubt it's a PSU issue.

Oh wow, I apparently have email notifications turned off for the forums, because I just now realized there were replies.

I've run this pc for a good three years or so and have never had an issues, so I doubt any of the parts are not properly seated.

I haven't experienced any more freezing in other games, and after doing some digging online I found a number of similar complaints with various 7xxx series cards. It looks like it may be an ATI driver issue.

The game that kept freezing for me was Battlefield Bad Company 2. Battlefield 3, Diablo III or any other game I've tried have not had any issues.

I found the thread you posted and another on a Total War forum talking about a similar issue with TW Shogun 2.
