Help a dumb guy install WinXP on slave drive plz

I bought the upgrade edition of WinXp. Since I got a second HD a long time ago, I've wanted to try a dual boot setup and now I want to go ahead with it.

I have Win98 setup on the master C: drive (30GB Maxtor) and I just formatted HD#2 (10GB Fujitsu) Slave in Fat32.

I've setup a handful of pc's with win98 always on the C: drive which it defaults to and I really can't remember at which point during the setup where it might ask which drive to install on.

What is the best way to install WinXP on the slave drive? I don't want to continue through the setup and realize its too late and files are already going on the C: drive.

I'm confused if I should load Win98 first or at all on the formatted slave drive, The XP manual seems to indicate I can choose to upgrade win98 or do a full WinXP install.

Should I use NTFS or keep Fat32? the drive is only 10GB.

I should know all this but I want to do it right the first time so any advice would be helpful.

W98 does not allow any other install partition than C:\

Win XP will give you the option during install to select the partition. Go with Fat if you need to access the partition from Win98 but it would be better to use NTFS.

Good luck!

From what I have read, you can install 98 after XP and it should work as a dual boot, but like Christoph said, you have to keep that partition as FAT. However, If you have a second hard drive, I would install XP on the C: drive and 98 on the 2nd drive and use a boot manager. The reason that I would use 2 hard drives is that 98 has to be FAT, but XP can use NTFS which is good for security.

From my research WIN98 has to go on first which you already have, and you should be prompted about the XP install. It will set up the dual boot option for you. Next question is FAT32 or NTFS. XP can read both FAT32 and NTFS, WIN98 can only deal with FAT32. If you want to share files and applications between the two then you would use FAT32.
