Cable Modem Questions...plz help

Here's the deal...I have had my cable connection since july. Until about the end of november i averaged 100 ping when i play games or just surfing the web. Since the end of november my average ping is over 500... Yes u heard me right 500!!! I traced my connection using ping plotter and saw that every sight i went to was about 500 ping... So i call my cable company today and i said whats the deal? I said why am i getting such bad ping yet my downloads are just fine... He says its not their fault that i get bad ping and its the sites that i go to... He supposedly checked my cable and said every thing was just fine. He said they are only responsible for the connection from their server to the net. the average ping from just my house to the server was 60. Then when i hit the next trace IP it went to about 200 and up from there. He also had me go to www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest and so i did and i got 420K and he said thats what im paying for. It showed my cable modem was a 1/3 of the speed on the average in the midwest. I also went to my friends house last night and tested his cable modem which was from the same company and he was averaging 100 ping... I am so confused on where the problem is coming from... I havent been able to play CS in 2 weeks *cries*. So if anyone has any ideas of what going on PLEASE reply.

Thanks

Ping times have little to do with modems -- more to do with how your IP packets are traveling to and from the sites you visit. Go to Speedguide and check out their registry tweeks. Your pings may be high because your MTU or other settings may be off.
