I have a Acer computer. I cannot find my DVD icon. so I can install some software program. The only items I see in my computer folder is the hard drive and another icon that's says my web site on MSN.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Can you see the DVD player in Device Manager?

A yellow triangle with an exclamation mark indicates that there is an issue with that device, it is being seen by Windows but not recognised as to what it actually is.
The first thing you should try is updating the drivers, make sure your computer is connected to the internet, right click on the yellow triangle and in the drop down menu select "update drivers".
Something must have corrupted the existing drivers, because from your original post it's obvious the DVD player was working. It is also possible that the DVD player has failed in some way, try the driver update first and let me know.
What sort of computer is this, laptop or tower?

What version of Windows?

Open the properties of the drive in device manager. Please post what it says in the Device Status window.

I don't think trying to update the drivers is going to help here - I suspect it's an upper/lower filter issue.

Device Status

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.

I agree with glc on this, here is a link to help you fix. Just scroll to the appropriate version of Windows operating system and follow the instructions.

For others that might have this same problem, what worked to get it going? Or what caused it?

I am guessing it was the upper/lower filter issue described in reno's link. This has been a continuing issue for many years.
