Trying to salvage data off Hitachi Deskstar

Trying to get the data off a friend's bad Hitachi Deskstar 160gb SATA drive. The date on the drive 2007. I pulled it from a Dell desktop computer.

I’m using my USB SATA adapter to connect to my computer and the drive shows up in My Computer as a drive letter, but you can’t access it to copy any data off. I downloaded a Hitach drive utility but it does not recognize the drive. Any ideas or other utilities to try? Is the freezer trick still relevant? TIA.

The traditional Hitachi DFT can't see drives on USB, you have to use WinDFT.

g,
I got WinDFT but it won't recognize this Hitachi drive after a scan. The drive shows up as a drive letter in Computer, but I just can't access anything. Any other utilities to try?

Got an old XP box laying around? You could also try booting a live Distro of Linux like GParted and see if you can access them that way.
