Installing Windows XP on Asus P8P67Pro

I miss XP as that was a fantastic system. I've learned you can install it on the Asus P8P67Pro board which is what I have. I found out you gotta go into the BIOS and change the SATA Configuration to IDE. I did that, but when I loaded the XP disc, it said it could not detect any hard drives.

Is there a way to install XP on my system without going into my machine and swapping wires around? Would that slipstream XP install disc work?

What happens when you set it back to what it was?

Which SATA controller are you using - the Intel 6.0 (gray), Intel 3.0 (blue), or Marvell (navy blue)?

The Asus download site is not cooperating right now, but you are going to have to get a preinstall driver for XP for the controller. This driver has to be installed via FLOPPY DISK and you will need a USB floppy drive. Press F6 at the beginning of Setup when prompted to install a 3rd party storage driver.

As glc pointed out, XP is brain dead in that the SATA driver can only be installed via a floppy disk. If your system lacks a floppy drive you can use a USB floppy drive.

You can, however, slipstream the driver onto the install CD. Check here for how to do it. It's more work but it's about the only other way if you don't have a floppy drive available.

I'll do a little reading about the slipstreaming idea. I would rather not have to buy a floppy drive. I've never made a slipstream install disc so this is all new territory to me.

Thanks.

Okay I'm in the process of making this custom slipstream disc. Which specific driver do I need:

1. Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology Driver Software V10.5.0.1026

2.Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver software V10.1.0.1008

3.Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver software V10.0.0.1046

4. JMicron JMB36X Controller Driver V1.17.58.2

5.Marvell Controller Driver V1.0.0.1045

I've tried burning the .iso image to a DVD twice now and for some reason ImgBurn just keeps getting hung up on finalizing the disc. My entire system is unresponsive.

Which service pack is the Windows XP install disk?

I recently installed Windows XP on an SATA SSD without any problems (no floppies).

I used a Windows XP Home install disk with service pack 3 slipstreamed in. It recognized the SATA drive and installed without any problems.

357mag 01-30-2013 07:58 PM

I included SP3 in my .iso image. My disk that I bought years ago is just SP2. I don't know but my solid state drive got suffocated to the max by a big snake. I was burning the .iso image to disk using ImgBurn and it kept getting hung up at the end. I tried to break the operation and my whole computer slowed down to an absolute crawl.

I had no choice but to remove my drive and replace it with another mechanical drive I had brand new in my closet.

Don't know if I unleashed a worm or virus or I got some freak electrical hang-up but my machine became like quicksand.

I'm up and running again.

That's interesting that you said you were able to install XP using SP3 without the need of a separate SATA Driver.

Maybe I'll try that.

357mag 01-31-2013 04:16 PM

I tried making a slipstream disc just incorporating SP3 with nothing else. That didn't work. Next I made another disc incorporating the SATA Driver. That kinda worked.

When I loaded the disc into my drive while I had a partition already made on my hard drive Windows noticed the drive.

When I loaded the disc while there was nothing but unallocated space, Windows said it could not detect any drives.

I've tried making many slipstreamed XP install disks now and it appears that making those is a pain in the butt. nLite and burning .iso and computers getting all hung up.

I ordered a USB Floppy Drive and I'm gonna try to load XP using the F6 method.

One thing I was wondering is how do I tell which specific file is the driver file? There are several files, some with a .dll extension, some with a .txt extension, others with a .sys extension.

There are no files with a .inf extension. There is some jraid files too.

glc 04-22-2013 10:53 AM

Assuming you are using the Intel controller (refer to my post #3 above):

Break out the motherboard manual and go to Section 4.5 - Creating a RAID driver disk. There are 2 ways of doing it - booting with the motherboard support DVD or running the DVD in Windows on another computer (the way I recommend). I know it says RAID, but this also includes an AHCI driver. Section 4.5.4 may also be pertinent - Using a USB floppy disk drive.

When installing using F6, nothing happens right away, but shortly you will be presented with a menu with a list of drivers. Choose the one that applies - I don't know how many choices you will have but you should be able to figure it out. I have an older board (P35) and the one that applied to me was "Intel ICH9R AHCI Driver". I'm guessing yours will be "P67" something because I think Intel stopped using the ICH numbering system after ICH10 on the P45 boards.

Those are for the JMicron controller.

Okay Thank You for the info. I'll give it a go when my floppy drive arrives.

SARGE 04-22-2013 08:22 PM

You've been working on this since January? Amazing, you have alot more patience than I would. ;)

357mag 04-23-2013 11:39 PM

No, I put the idea aside for awhile but now I'm back to it.

Anyway I followed the instructions and made the floppy using the motherboard DVD but couldn't get XP loaded. After I hit F6 I saw 4 drivers listed on my floppy. I tried each and every one of them but kept getting an error message. A problem has been detected with your computer and Windows has been shut down... type of message.

Don't know what went wrong.

glc 04-23-2013 11:53 PM

What exact SATA controller/port are you using, and how is it configured in the bios? What were the 4 drivers? What port is the DVD drive on? What bios version does the motherboard have?

357mag 04-24-2013 07:54 PM

Unfortunately I don't think I can answer as I simply don't know anything about which ports. All I remember about the drivers is one was a mobile express thing and a couple were like the ones that you mentioned (ICH). There were no drivers name p67 or anything like that. There was another driver called desktop/workstation I think.

Sorry I cannot provide more detailed info.

glc 04-24-2013 10:57 PM

Please refer back to post #3. There are 3 different color ports. Open your motherboard manual and find the motherboard detailed diagrams. Each port has a unique ID - please tell me the color and ID of each port something is connected to, and exactly what is connected to it.

You can get the bios version on the initial startup screen or by entering the bios and looking around.

While looking around in the bios, find the settings for the controllers and tell me if they are set to IDE, AHCI, or RAID - and be specific to EXACTLY which controller.

I cannot really help you unless you can answer my detailed questions in detail. I really do need to know exactly what each driver on the disk is that you could choose from. Please don't second guess me.

357mag 05-03-2013 03:28 PM

Bios Version is 1.0.0.0016.

I haven't gotten around to opening up my machine yet. I'm kinda debating if its worth it.

Another problem is now when I press the Enter key when the XP Setup Program prompts you to put in the floppy disk into the A: drive, nothing happens. I keep getting stuck at the screen that says insert floppy and press Enter when ready.

So I insert the floppy and press Enter but Windows does not advance beyond that prompt message.

glc 05-03-2013 04:28 PM

You aren't reading the bios version correctly, it's just going to be a 4 digit number. Board was released with 0804 and the latest is 3602.

Look, I hate to be rude, but if you can't be bothered to open up the case and answer my questions, I can't be bothered to try to help you any more!

The way things are going and the way you are reacting, I'd recommend you forget about the floppy drive/disk and XP - just load Windows 7 back on it and install Classic Shell.
