corrupted mbr

A friend's computer got a virus that corrupted the mbr on her Thinkpad T61 (it caused many other problems too). I put in a clone of the hard drive that I'd made earlier. She'd like to use the original disk for storage. Is this safe? Should I do a zero fill? will that remove every trace of the virus?

Viruses that corrupt the mdr are few and far in-between... Zapping the partition and recreating it and then format should be good enough. Running the the HD makers tools against the drive would be a good idea.

I have read of cases where only a small portion of the drive (I guess the directory?) was deleted and the malware was still able to migrate into the reinstalled OS.

Could I just clone a good drive to it? Wouldn't that overwrite everything, including the mbr?
