If your worried about it, look for an updated BIOS.

Get a third or fourth opinion and run CPU-Z and/or Belarc Advisor.

Is this the machine?
HP ProBook 5310m Notebook PC specifications - HP Large Enterprise Business products If so, the board only supports 4 GBs max. Going to HP's website gave me several models to choose from, so I picked what would be most likely. If you could be more specific in the model number that would help immensely. Update BIOS?
My BIOS is outdated (2009). Everything works good except It doesn't show the 8gb of ram. Shows slot 1 & 2 as empty. I'm scared to try to update the BIOS in fear of epic failure. Is there any real need for an upgrade or should I go with the "If it aint broke, don't fix it.?

Belarc Advisor shows 4gb in each slot,8gb total. Everything works fine. Is it worth risking disaster by trying to flash the BIOS? I never did that before.

If Belarc is seeing it then it is working. CPU-Z will also be seeing it....try it.
Don't let it bother you....it works. ![]() Personally, I would not risk bricking my motherboard for no good reason whatsoever. Last edited by David M; 03-20-2013 at 04:57 PM. |

I would NOT mess with the bios - and I'd seriously consider pulling the ram and putting a pair of 2gb modules in.

I took out 2 sticks of bad ram 2X2gb,4gb total and put in 2 sticks,4gb.each of Crucial ram. 8 gb total. Can this harm the motherboard? It's running great now.

It won't hurt anything but it still does not change the fact that your motherboard will never be able to utilize more than 4 gigs of RAM.
