it would be boot from USB device, not cd rom. I would be surprised that there would not be an option in the BIOS for this. Try F8 for the boot option menu or it may be a different, look on the splash screen.

Well you should be able to.
To access the external cd drive... Turn on your computer. When the initial screen displays, press F12 to access the boot menu. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ OR You should have a recovery partition on the hard drive To access the recovery partition... To recover using the utilities on your computer’s internal storage drive: Make sure the computer is turned off. Press and hold the 0 (zero) key on your keyboard while powering on the computer. |

Is this the model you have?: Model Content Page
If so, according to the manual, you should be able to press F12 for boot options and select USB or CD.

tx for your suggestions...
(a) pressing f12 during boot yields boot device options...but cd/usb is not listed (b) trying the f12 on boot up six times....it finally gave cd/usb option on the 5th try (c) windows xp sp2 installation disc runs for about 3 minutes and then crashes giving BSOD (at point where setup wants to "open windows") (d) tried strep c three times..bsod each time at same point during installation attempt(s) -------------------------- so--went back to the win 7 (which was restored last night using the recovery portion of the hdd) -------------------------- computer still very slow---but---reovery installed a Norton protection program which may be cuase of the slowness??? -------------------------- Also--internal wireless card will receive the signal from my (Verizon 4g wireless) router--but---cant get an internet connection. Moved the router to one foot distance from the computer--now it connects to internet. Interestingly- when it would not connect to internet, router signal was being received and rated as "excellent" signal strength what a bunch if issues with this computer--getting discouraged

Two reasons would be because a Toshiba NB255-N245 mini notebook is running an Intel Atom N455 CPU with a mere GB of RAM. If you want faster, you going to need something with a bit more horsepower than a hamster.

Ive played with these in stores..the demos ran much faster than mine with same cpu, ram,hdd etc
My tablets with 1 ghz cpu, 512 ram etc run much faster than even my pentium 4 notebooks with more ram and faster cpus..must be the solid state electronics in rge tablets |

Oh, it came with Win 7? That would be Starter Edition.
Restore it again (unless you blew away the recovery partition) and uninstall the preinstalled crap such as Norton. I'd run diags on the hard drive, and spend the 35 bucks to max out the ram. Computer memory upgrades for Toshiba NB255-N245 Netbook from Crucial.com |

DI did reinstall from recovery portion of hdd
Wild prefer to dump the win7 starter and try XPRT The XPRT won't install..as per above. Will take off the Norton and see what occurred. Which hdd diagnostics do u suggest? Also..sometimes the option to boot from CD does not appear after pressing f12 key??? I'm starting to suspect hardware difficultii like the machine for its small size but am not yet happy with its strange ways.. |

What brand is the hard drive? Get diags from the manufacturer.
If you don't replace the ram, test it, download Memtest86+. If you are using an external CD/DVD, are you using a USB "Y" cable? |

You need a Y cable or an AC-powered external drive. Only one USB port doesn't put out enough power to run a slim external CD drive well. All slim externals I've seen come with a Y cable.
XP is failing for one or more of the following reasons: 1. Faulty install media 2. Faulty external drive 3. Faulty RAM 4. Faulty HDD |

those netbooks dont run half bad if you stuff 2gb or 4gb of ram in them and an SSD drive..
