fdisk help fixing my mini

so i have a mini with no os on it and messed up partitions, i have a win7 ultimate disc but when i got to install no partitions are ntsf. So i got that hint that i need to make a usb with fdisk. i proceeded to do so with a 4gb pny thumb. Used hp usb storage tool and the files from win98 boot. formatted usb and made it fat 32. SO when i put usb into my mini and load thru usb from bios the cmd comes up and says only C:\ no matter what letter i type i cannot get it off c drive and i cannot execute the fdisk.exe bc it just stays on c:\. how do i fix this? i really need this mini to work and get win 7 on. its a inspirion mini 10. hopefully its just something dumb i forgot to do.

any help is greatly appreciated

You do not need or want to run fdisk. What you need to do is use the Win 7 setup to delete the partitions, then create a new partition which can then be formatted NTFS.

Is this a mac mini or some other small form factor PC? Does it have a working optical drive? What OS was originally installed on this unit?

GParted -- About

Get the Live for CD/USB.

EDIT: It's a Dell Inspiron Mini 10. That's a netbook that came with XP. Unless they have been blown away, it came with 3 partitions - a diag/utility, main, and recovery.

Gparted is also found on Parted Magic which can be downloaded from here:

downloads ? Parted Magic

It also comes with some hard drive diagnostic utilities which will allow you to run some tests on your hard drive.

From the Parted Magic website following the link that says "How can I write (burn) ISO files to CD or DVD?" :

How to Write ISO Files to CD or DVD

Exactly why do you think "the partitions are blown away"?
The hard drive could also be bad or your external optical drive may be acting up.
If you can find out the manufacturer of the hard drive, you can go to their website and download the manufacturer's hard drive diagnostic utilities. They will be in the form of an iso file that you have to burn to a cd-r or dvd-r, just like parted magic of gparted.

If it had both MacOS and Windows on it, you may want to zero fill the hard drive.
