Accessing hard drive on a partially functioning laptop
I have a HP laptop running Vista and I wanted to know if there is a way I can access the hard drive through the laptop when it won't start up, but I can get to start up repair and the advanced recovery options afterwards? Basically, is there anything I can do to get my files today, rather than removing the hard drive and getting an adapter for it.
System restore and start up repair don't help, but if there's any way to sort this, I'd appreciate the knowledge! By my own admission I am somewhat of a laymen... Cheers! |

Would there be a command prompt that would let me copy the files to an external hard drive, for example?

"IF", the lappy supports booting off an external flash drive, then odds are you could copy to it from a command prompt.
If the laptops hard drive is SATA, you could hook it up to a desktop in minutes without any sort of adaptor.

USB or CD/DVD boot with some kind of portable OS. You are going to need some kind of external drive to copy the files to.
Regardless, I'd get an adapter just to have it. This makes it easier to do whatever you need to do. This one is cheap and will work with any type hard drive: IDE/SATA to USB 2.0 Cable Adapter - Turn Your 2.5", 3.5" or 2020 |
