RAM issues
So I just ordered some ram for a couple computers I'm working on. Here is the ram I ordered
CORSAIR XMS3 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 Desktop Memory Model CMX16GX3M4A1333C9 - Newegg.com My plan was to split it between two machines. The First one contains this processor and motherboard Processor AMD Phenom II X4 970 Black Edition Deneb 3.5GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Desktop Processor HDZ970FBGMBOX - Newegg.com Motherboard Newegg.com - ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 AM3 AMD 880G HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard Machine #2 Processor Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor BX80570E8400 - Newegg.com Motherboard Evga 132-YW-E179-FTW I installed the 2 4gb sticks in the first machine and it works perfect Then I installed the other 2 sticks in machine #2 and I started and received this message- Warning! Now system is in Safe Mode. Please reset Cpu or Memory Frequency in the Cmos Press F1 to continue or Del to enter Setup So I pulled the battery and reset the cmos and restarted. It seemed to work fine, when I restarted I got the same error message. So I figured that maybe one of the sticks was bad so I switched it with the pair in machine #1 and they worked fine for it. Started up machine #2 and same story. Then I tried some other ram from a friend, this ram. ADATA XPG Gaming Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model AX3U1600GB2G9-2G - Newegg.com And low and behold it worked perfectly in machine #2 so messages or anything. So what am I missing, do i need to change a setting or something or did I miss some compatibility or something? Also I checked the bios and its fully updated and tried the ram in all 4 slots. Also, other than the error message on boot, I hit F1 to skip and the machine boots and works just fine. It just kinda bugs me that I have to hit F1 every time to start it up After writing this it got me thinking, am I having this problem because the processor and the ram are different frequency's and I just need to have them run independently or maybe overclock the cpu a little bit to match the ram? |

did you set the vdimm voltage according to the sticks?
Often times on intel rigs it will undervolt on first boot...

Yeah, I checked the voltages against what the ram is made for and they are both set for 1.5 volts

you might check to see if there is an updated BIOS for your second rig... if so you might consider flashing it with the old good ram installed from a cleared CMOS state...
then retry the new ram. if you're on the latest bios the only other option is to get different ram or head over the the corsair forums and see if they have some settings for that ram and your board/cpu to make it work properly |

XMS ram is finicky. The OP's experience is not uncommon. It is enthusiast ram and will require fiddling in the BIOS. I am not sure how to get it to play nice but I am sure with some googling, you can find it. I would return it and get Corsair Vengeance 1.5v ddr3 low profile.

Yeah. I still don't know why my BIOS kept setting the voltage at 1.65 when all mine are 1.50, even on default. Then I read where that is common. Had to change it manually to 1.5

yeah and it's been so long since i've played with a C2D set up I dont remember the the BIOS tweaks I had to do to get some ram working... If memory serves it auto sets some of the secondary timings way too tight...and without having a board i wouldnt remember.
