Computer will not boot
Can someone help with this please.
I took out a strip of RAM to check its details ahead of doing an upgrade. Motherboard is Intel® Desktop Board D915GAG As far as I can tell i put it back correctly but now computer just won't boot. |

Does it boot if you take it back out?

I found this when I Googled up the mother board.
Notes Remove the PCI Express* x16 video card before installing or upgrading memory to avoid interference with the memory retention mechanism. To be fully compliant with all applicable DDR SDRAM memory specifications, the board should have DIMMs that support the Serial Presence Detect (SPD) data structure. This allows the BIOS to read the SPD data and program the chipset to accurately configure memory settings for optimum performance. If non-SPD memory is installed, the BIOS tries to correctly configure the memory settings, but performance and reliability can be impacted or the DIMMs might not function under the designated frequency. Does this have something to do with the non booting? |

If you only removed/reinstalled an original piece of ram it's not going to be a compatibility issue, it's more likely that it isn't sitting in the slot or locked down correctly.
I know the "out of case build" that glc has linked to might seem a little overkill considering all you did was remove a piece of ram, but it does make for an entertaining afternoon trouble shooting a simple fault. |

The RAM in this particular computer needs upgrading anyway.
The RAM in it now is KINGSTON KVR333X64C25K2/512. There are two modules. This RAM is now discontinued; do you know which more modern RAM would be suitable? |

Computer memory upgrades for Intel D915GAG Motherboard from Crucial.com
You can find it in Google but I also believe Kingston offers a lifetime warranty if it is in fact toast. Kingston Value RAM Memory-2GB DDR333 PC2700 CL2.5 Non ECC DIMM KVR333X64C25K2/2G Kit of 2-1GB 184pin-Best Computer Online Store - Buy with Discount Prices from Houston Texas-Directron.com If you don't want to hassle with it, I would get the kit on top from Crucial considering the price and guaranteed compatibility. Shipping to Australia from Crucial or Directron will be a killer.
Here is a locally available kit that's compatible, but I'd pull the old ram due to the speed difference: Mwave.com.au - Corsair 2GB 2x1GB PC-3200 DDR (VS2GBKIT400C3) |

If you want to max out the board (4gb) you can get 2 of those kits. You need a 64 bit OS (Vista, 7, 8) to use all 4 gigs, a 32 bit OS will show about 3.25gb usable.
