Error Code 43 please help
The computer my mother has started messing up a few weeks ago. None of the usb ports will recognize anything, except the wireless keyboard/mouse adapter. When tried, you will hear the sound when you plug something in(even the sound when something is unplugged). But after about 15-30 seconds an error message will pop up saying "usb device not recognized" and in device manager it shows in "unknown device" with a yellow sign. Checking properties shows "code 43"
Here's what I've tried to do to fix it. The pc is a Dell Vostro 230. About 2 years old. -Tried multiple devices(printer, iPods(2 different ones),external hard drive, even a port hub we bought to see if that worked. -Tried plugging in to every port (4 on back, 2 in front). -Uninstalled all Host Controllers (5 in total) and let them re-install. -Checked for updates on said controllers. - Installed Chipset drivers -Ran Anti-virus (no viruses) - Ran Mbytes (no infections) - Ran CCleaner - Checked to see if windows update could help. Although, I'm not sure if past updates could have anything to with it. Checked logs and the only failed updates in recent weeks are for Microsoft Security Essential. Is there anything I'm missing that could help? |

You can type error code 43 in a search and get a bunch. Here is one. Good luck.
Code 43: Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems

Doesn't look like there's anything in that article that hasn't already been tried.
I'm leaning toward a Windows reinstall, unless you have a system restore point from before the problems started occurring available. |

I know, just showing an example of what is out there. I love doing research. As you wrote though, I usually go for the reinstall, lacking patience to actually fix.
"Important: If a USB device is generating the Code 43 error, uninstall every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers hardware category in Device Manager as part of the driver reinstall. This includes any USB Mass Storage Device, USB Host Controller, and USB Root Hub." Did you go beyond the Host Controller? Last edited by SARGE; 04-18-2013 at 09:27 PM. |

Yes, I uninstalled everything. Didn't fix it. I guess I will just have to re-install Windows. Thanks

That's too bad, hope you can save files, pics, etc. Reinstalling Windows reinstalls same drivers that you already have, which tells me there is something besides drivers that is amiss now. Good ole Windows.

Shouldn't be a big deal to save files to an external drive, then use the recovery partition to reinstall. However, I would look at System Restore first.
