Computer to monitor connection question
 

I have a new Asus VS238H-P 23 inch monitor that only has VGA, D-Sub, and HDMI connections in. The computer I am considering buying only has VGA and Display Port, out connections.
Which of these three connections would give me the best clarity.
1). Just use the VGA to VGA connections.
2). Buy a Display port to HDMI cable from Newegg for about $20, so I could use HDMI to HDMI
3). But a cheap video card for about $30 that has HDMI out, and install it in the computer. Then I could use HDMI to HDMI.
I am NOT into gaming etc. so I would not need an expensive video card.

If you have the choice always use the digital over the analog video connections. Purchase a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter. Confirm whether it is a DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort.

Better prices on cables and adapters than Newegg...

What is the brand and model of the computer? Why aren't you building a computer?

I assume it is a regular DisplayPort ??

It's odd someone would sell a computer without a DVI port. Do you have a link to the advertisement?

I would be willing to bet glc could find you a better computer for the money. What is your budget and how do you plan on using the computer?

I looked up the model number and you have the choice of either a dual VGA or dual DVI connector.

Nope, it's VGA or DisplayPort only. I think David is looking at that $62 USB to DVI adapter, which will NOT work well. That's a small form factor computer, and you shouldn't even plan on putting a video card in it - what it comes with is what you get. Hope you don't ever plan on upgrading it. That's a lot of $$$ for what it is, not a good value.

I'd get a DisplayPort to DVI cable.

That computer looks like the one I am watching on ebay. However the buy it now price is only $520.00 I asked the guy about the OUT connections and he said he would install a VGA, DVI, HDMI card for an additional $30. He gave me the specs on the card, I believe it was a 1GB ATI HD 6450 graphics card. So, if I deceide to buy that computer, shuld I have him install that card for $30, or just get a Display port to HDMI cable. Or a Display port to DVI cable. Thanks, Mike

The card is a good option, as long as it fits (I think it has to be half height low profile) and the power supply can handle it.

In the link I provided it says there is an option to get that computer with two DVI ports....that's what I am trying to say. :)

I'm not suggesting a USB to DVI adapter. I was suggesting a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, no sort of video translation is required. I am using a computer right now with three monitors. My graphics card has one DVI port and 4 Mini DisplayPorts. Both of the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters I have now work just fine.

Which is a Nvidia 605 video card for 82 bucks.

Thanks David M and glc for you replies and suggestions. Just one more question...I see that computer and many others displayed in the vertical position to make it look like a tower etc. Is it OK to stand it up like that ??
It could also be tricky putting dvd in the unit, as it would tend to fall out ??

I have a slimline HP here and it's designed to stand up. Yes, it is a bit tricky to put a DVD in the drive but it works.

The ONLY reason I have it is it was given to me dead, I would NEVER buy a HP computer or a slimline anything. Cost me 50 bucks to fix it and it came with Win 7.
