HDD Won't Spin Up

Hey everyone,

So I have a 2TB HDD from Western Digital that won't spin up. It is a WD20EADS-00W4B0 2TB Western Digital drive if you need the exact model. I have tried pulling the drive and putting it into my current system to where a known working drive is, and those connections do not work. Tried in a known working external enclosure as well and it won't spin up. BIOS boot does not "see" the drive.

Is there anything that I can do to try and revive this drive? I sit right next to where this drive was, no clicking or metallic sounds that I have heard. I just accessed it last on Wednesday(05/01/2013).

It shouldn't be a problem getting it replaced on warranty, but it would probably have to go to a data recovery company to recover your files.

Hey glc,

Good to talk to you again! Sadly, the drive went out of warranty in 2011 according to WD serial lookup. However, I do not need the data off of the drive, I had it all backed up onsite and off. This is something that I have not dealt with before and I would like to make it a project if at all possible. Is there anyway to replace the electronics or anything to maybe make it come back to life?

You would have to find a circuit board from an identical drive.

A circuit board for that drive is $64.95 at that site. I personally don't think it's worth messing with it.

Hey guys,

Thank you all for the awesome help. I agree with glc that to get the circuit board would be almost as a much as brand new drive, probably not worth it. Thank you for that link showing me that deal on those HDD's, I think I might pick up two of them!

EDIT: On second thought, the WD's are looking a little weak on the reviews for their storage drives. Any recommendations or should I still go with the WD?

Google top ten HDDs or something like that and do a little reading. That's how I settled on a Seagate Constellation drive after all that bleak reviews on the WD drives. Seems it wasn't a good idea to buy WD at that time I bought mine. It was a few months ago.

The AV-GP drive is a decent storage drive, it's actually designed for 24/7 operation in something like a media streaming box. They do have a 3 year warranty and I'll take one over a Green for any use.

I won't touch Seagates.

The "Enterprise" model on the right of that page has a 5-star rating a-n-d the highest price. The "WD Black" in the middle is probably the 'best bang for your buck', (same SATA 6.0 and 5-year warranty as the "Enterprise"). And, in spite of the 4-star rating, it is Newegg's "Customer Choice Award Winner".
