Latest and Greatest monitors today (2013)......

As I search this web site for monitor advice most of what I've found is quite old, so if I could ask, what is state of the art in monitors in mid 2013? I was looking at higher res ones in about the 27-30" size. Reading some of the comments at Amazon, New Egg etc. isssues such as coating reflection, light bleeding, customer service in case of troubles are mentioned. There also seems to be a large price difference between some top brands, does anyone of them outshine (no pun intended!) the others at a price point?

Hanns-G monitors are typically recommend around here. I also like recommending Dell monitors.

When you start to get into the larger-sized monitors, it's sometimes worthwhile to look at and compare prices for HDTVs. I recommend LG. Vizio is also a good choice.

Are looking for a standard monitor for desktop usage and gaming, or a monitor for graphics work?

Standard desktop usage but would like best quality visuals. KDM

If your not gaming then I would recommend whatever size you would like with an ips panel and led back-lighting, Asus makes some nice ones as well as several other brands. Just find one with a nice warranty and good reviews, also I have heard that amazon is a lot better than newegg for monitors as their return policy is different and its easier to return to amazon for things like dead pixels.

IPS panels are typically more expensive than regular monitors, and typically only needed when doing color-accurate graphics work.

Not really. IPS panels are much better even for a regular user.

I can attest for IPS panels. I got a 23" Asus IPS and it is sweet. It has a Splendid button which gives me modes for certain uses. I also found my hidden object games easier to seek and find.

Went with the LG EA83 27EA83V and Mount It wall mount. It will run on my old Dell with the NVidea Quadro FX3450 tillI build my new PC latter this year.

Maybe so, but if you are gaming and need a fast response time, you may have to settle for TN. I haven't seen any IPS yet any faster than 5ms.

I was reading that 5ms is fast enough for gaming...not true? Think about how fast that is, 5/1000 of a second.

Your right David, you probably wont notice 5ms response time.

The guy saying TN panels are horrible has evidently not ever set one up correctly for color. Mine looks great for a tn panel, its not ips color accuracy but it looks better than most tv's out today and I get a 120hz refresh rate which no ips panel can do yet.

Mine is listed as 1ms, but I have never had a monitor that I noticed lag on. Of course I have never had a monitor with more than about 8ms that I actually gamed on. I have noticed it on a tv but that was completely expected.

I bought am Asus 27in LCD this year and when i googled it finding it to be a TN panel... All i can say is coming from an Acer 22in that was 4 years old the Asus is miles better as far as color, clarity and everything.... it is an amazing monitor...

What about viewing angles? It's awesome how I don't have to sit right in frond of the monitor all the time.

I can see mine all the way over to about a 45 degree angle with no problems, I have no idea why would would want to set at the end of your desk and look at your monitor from the edge.

When I move head up and down, the colours change on my TN panel. It is only noticeable when weaving a webpage with light fonts, such as YouTube.

TN panels suck. Period. Glad the industry is bringing more IPS's in.

My IPS Viewsonic is 16ms and I don't recall ever seeing any ghosting when I gamed with it. I guess then it depends on the quality of the monitor, not just on raw numbers (especially considering how deceitful manufacturers are with their numbers).
