Angry cd rom problem or hdd????

Hi there...

Curretly I have a 50x Speed cd rom and a 8X Ricoh burner..My hdd is a Western Digital hdd(40gig).. Oh my comp is an AMD 1.3 and with 640MB of SD Ram.

My problem is everytime I tranfer files from a cd drive(my 50x speed rom or my burner) to my hdd,it often slows down the running of my computer..Does any1 have any similar problem here when they try to copy files eg 650 mb from the cd and tranfer them into their hdd?? Also if u didnt understand me,a similar problem is whenever I install an application or a game from a cd to my hdd,my computer for some reason runs slow?Once I finished installing,my computer runs smooth once again...

So any1 please help me thanks

What udma are your hard drives(udma66/100)?
Are you using an 80 wire ribbon with them or standard 40 pin ide ribbon?
Does your motherboard support udma 66/100?
The 80 wire cable is identified by a blue end that goes to motherboard and a black end that goes to master.(gray in the middle)

If you're using an 80 wire cable, the configuration for the hard drives would be blue end to motherboard, gray to slave and black end to master, both drives would be configured to CS(cable select)
If you're using a standard ribbon, the configuration you have is correct.
WD drive jumper set to master and the other drive set to slave.
The configuration for the cdroms seems correct,it's usually when a cdrom is slave to the hard drive that a slow down can happen.
You may want to check in device manager and see if DMA is enabled for the hard drive.
Depending on your burner software,it's best to keep dma disabled for the cdroms.
Nero, for example, works with dma enabled, other burn software may not.
A general slowdown may take place as the files are transferred,as the system dedicates itself to the transfer. If you're trying to do other things while the files are copied, this will slow it down further.
Also if you have anti-virus software running while a transfer is taking place,a further slowdown may be happening. It may be adviseable to temporarily close all running applications while transferring or installing.
Does it transfer the files in a timely manner?About 3-5 minutes for a 650meg file.
