Problematic Hard Drives

I have an idea of what could be causing the problem although I may just be talking straight out of ignorance. All I really need to know is if my hard drives are not working permanently or can be fixed with recovering the Data. I recieved a Maxtor D540X-4K as a Christmas gift and had only just installed it today. When I looked at the Jumper Settings I didn't realise I had it on Cable Select instead of Slave. I switched the Ribbon cable so that it could reach the Hard Drive meaning that the Cable Select now had the Master position of the cable. While the other hard drive was already set to Master as well. Now both hard drives are dead and neither start up. I believe they canabalized each other because they were both set to Master although I may be wrong. I didn't touch the original Hard Drive at all which leads me to believe that it isn't fried by Static electricity. If you have any other theories and/or cures please Reply as soon as possible. Thanks

Step One - Jumper both drives for Cable select with the drive containing the Operating System on the Master Position of the cable.
