Boom display setting/display adapter problem

I hope somebody out there can help on this one, its just about killing me.

About every fifth time that I turn on my computer it will start to load fine and then it will freeze. In the upper left hand corner the cursor will just sit there. I am then force to disconnect the power cord to the power supply to restart the machine.(on/off button on computer will not work)As I do this my comp will boot to safe mode because its telling me that there is a problem with my display settings or display adapter.(It will say something like; current settings do not work with adapter and/or display adapter is incorrect.)I usually just correct my settings to 1240 x 768 16 bit color and reboot and every thing will be fine until it happens again.

I have a Pen II 450,STB Velocity 4400 Riva TNT card, 128MB RAM.

The only thing different that I did to this comp is I took out the old video card and inserted a GeForce II to test it. Everything went fine deleted old drivers put in new ones and vice versa.

Everything will be fine until I turn the machine on about every fith time or so.I turn it off everyday don't know if that has anything to do with it.It runs fine except for this friggin problem, I just can not figure it out.

Any help and suggestions is appreciated

The drivers for these cards are in the same NVida driver program. What I suggest is that you go to NVidia.com and download the newest driver pack. then go to the control panel>system>display adapter and delete all the showing adapters, load the downloaded drivers, and restart. I am willing to bet that it loaded the standard Microsoft Display adapter when you were fooling with it.

Check to see if your hardware supports it. However, this problem are mostly due to the OS. Make sure u used the correct Driver for your OS.
