Lobster, if you can not see the hard drive when you open "My Computer" then winxp doesn't "See it". Instead of clicking on harware profiles button in the system properties menu, click on the Devicemanager button, then in this menu click the plus+ sign by you hard drive icon to see if the new hard drive is here. Ah, did you partition & format this drive in FDisk? Rancher

Rancher-
thanks for the reply. i checked it out and i can see the hd in Device Manager, so windows is 'seeing' it, but still not in My Computer. i got the drive from a friend who said he was giving me an "empty" drive. what do i need to do to fdisk and format this baby? thanks again for your help. |

Wrong, deviceman sees what the bios picks up & My Computer sees what winxp picks up from the registry. To determine the windows rediness of this drive bootup with a win98 startup disk in drive a. When ask "do you want cdrom support" arrow down to "NO"[enter]. At the prompt type; fdisk [enter] follow the menu. I think pressing 4 will show details of the drive such as active primary partition size etc. I would just choose delete partition if one is already there & start over as you stated this is an empty drive but could have residual files that are viri or corrupt. After partitioning the drive restart the puter with NO CDROM support again & this time type; format c: [enter]if you have no win98 startup disk or a friend that does email me i will send you one 1.3mb rancher

Kewl, ya just taught me something. I see if the disk in already seen by windows (formated) then the format line is greyed out.
